Design Meetup
El Niño was thrilled to host its first Design Meetup, bringing together designers from diverse fields to share insights and showcase cutting-edge projects. The evening featured three inspiring speakers: Ton Nieuwenhuis with Nothing but Leafde, Vera Stefany with Beyond Eye Candy: The Transformative Power of Beautiful Design, and Adam Butler with Creative as Fuck: How to Never Run Out of Good Ideas. Attendees had the chance to connect, exchange ideas, and network in a lively atmosphere, enjoying complimentary dinner and drinks. The event offered a vibrant space for creativity, collaboration, and meaningful conversations across design disciplines.
Our Vision from the Meetup
Today, design is more accessible and influential than ever, shaping experiences, products, and ideas in ways that touch nearly every aspect of our lives. From digital interfaces to physical spaces, thoughtful design has the power to inspire, solve problems, and create meaningful connections. We organized this Design Meetup because we see a growing curiosity about design and creativity across all industries.
Professionals from various fields are exploring how design can amplify their impact, solve real-world problems, and bring ideas to life. With this Design Meetup, we wanted to create a space where designers can share insights, showcase their work, get inspired, and connect across disciplines.
Highlights from the Speakers Lineup
This year’s lineup explores creativity, design, and storytelling in bold and unexpected ways. In Leafde: A Plant Asylum for Dialogue and Awareness, plants become storytellers, inviting audiences to reflect on inclusivity, diversity, and care through playful yet meaningful narratives that blend physical installations with digital tools. In Beyond Eye Candy: The Transformative Power of Beautiful Design, we dive into how aesthetics shape perception, showing that beauty and function are not opposites, but partners in creating trust, usability, and lasting emotional connection. Finally, Creative as Fuck: How to Never Run Out of Good Ideas tackles the blank page struggle with practical strategies, revealing how constant collection of ideas, from fleeting thoughts to deep dives into archives, builds the foundation for limitless creativity. Together, these talks offer fresh insights into how we can see, feel, and create differently.

Leafde: A Plant Asylum for Dialogue and Awareness
Leafde explores complex topics like inclusivity, diversity, origins, and the right to exist by giving plants a voice as storytellers. Inspired by research suggesting plants have individuality and consciousness. At the heart of the project is the Plant Asylum, first launched at TETEM in Enschede, where visitors brought their plants and shared stories about their origins, character, experiences, and hopes. These narratives, accessible through QR codes and enhanced with AR and digital tools, transform plants into companions with their own histories. The name Leafde combines “leaf” with the Dutch word liefde (love), and custom design elements add warmth and personality, making the installation visually captivating while sparking thoughtful engagement.

Beyond Eye Candy: The transformative power of beautiful design
Appearance shapes perception and human experience in powerful ways. From product packaging to digital interfaces, visual design influences first impressions, evokes positive emotions, and builds trust. While functionality is essential, beauty enhances usability and satisfaction, making interactions feel more intuitive and enjoyable. Companies like Apple demonstrate how thoughtful design can foster loyalty even when minor flaws exist. Beauty and function complement each other, well-designed products are not only easier to use but also more engaging and emotionally impactful, proving that beautiful design is far more than mere decoration.

Creative as Fuck: How to never run out of good ideas
Starting creative work often brings blank page syndrome, when your mind goes completely blank. Waiting for ideas to strike rarely works; instead, creativity thrives on preparation: Always Be Collecting. By capturing fleeting thoughts, observations, and references over time, a personal archive forms, providing a safety net when the blank page looms. Two key methods are Bird Song (noting ideas as they appear) and Crate Diving (actively exploring books, archives, and other sources for hidden gems). Together, these practices ensure you’re never starting from zero and create the conditions for inspiration to appear exactly when it’s needed.
